Lemuel Pratt Grant was born in
Frankfort, Maine in 1817. At age 19, he left the farm and village
store to become a rodman in the Engineer Branch of the under
construction Philadelphia & Reading RR. In only one year, he had
made his way up to become an assistant engineer for that company. |
In 1840, he was hired as an
assistant engineer by the building Georgia RR. His party located the
line between Madison and Atlanta, some 65 miles. He did a 2-year
stent with the Central (of Georgia) RR, then returned to the Georgia
RR. Grant appears to have committed himself to Atlanta as early as
1844, when he began buying large tracts of land in the future city. |
Grant continued railroad
construction with the Montgomery & West Point RR for three years,
then back to the Georgia RR as resident engineer until 1853, but
also spending 2 years as Chief Engineer of the building Atlanta &
West Point RR. From 1853 - 1860, he was engaged in RR construction
in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and road surveys and locations
of proposed roads in Alabama and Georgia. |
After the war, he was General
Superintendent of the Atlanta & West Point from 1866 - 1881. For
part of that time, he was also President of the Georgia
Western RR (Atlanta to Birmingham). |
Grant married Laura Loomis
Williams in 1843. The couple had at least 4 children before she died
in 1879. In 1881, he married Mrs. Jane L. Crew and they had one
child. |
Grant is shown in the 1860 census
in Atlanta as a Civil Engineer, 42 years old, with $65,000 Real
Estate and $6,500 in Personal Estate. |
After the war, Grant became a
leader in Atlanta, advocating a public school system and becoming a
member of its first Board of Education. In 1883, he gave over 100
acres of land to the city for a park (Grant Park) for all the
people. He died in 1893. |
Grant is on this site because of
his connection to the Blue Mountain RR, the repairs of several
bridges in East Tennessee and the repairs of post-Sherman railroads
in Georgia. He also designed and supervised the construction of the
city defenses for Atlanta and Augusta. |
