Dear Sir, |
A copy of your letter to the President
dated Nov 1st has been forwarded to me from the Engineer Bureau at
Richmond. The duty of entering into contracts with the Companies holding
Charters for a Rail Road between Rome Ga & Blue Mountain Ala. for the
completion of the link under the recent act of Congress loaning the
Bonds of Confederate States to that end and purpose has been assigned to
me. I have had an interview with Prest & Directors of the Ga & Ala R. R.
Co at Rome. I have passed over or near the Route of the proposed Road
inspected the profiles and noted as near as possible the work done. My
instructions do not mention the line of Road from Dalton to Rome nor do
I find any reference thereto in the Act of Congress. The impression was
made on my mind while in Rome that the Companies you represent and the
Ga & Ala Co would unite to build the Road. About one half of the grading
& bridging between these points have been executed. This work should be
embraced in the contract with the Govt whether the contract be made with
the one or the other of the companies or both united. |
I will meet your Committee at any
convenient point you may designate in the latter part of this or the
early part of next week. |
Very Respectfully |
L. P. Grant |

{The lack of iron and time
probably caused the Congress to assume the Rome to Dalton leg would be
run on the Rome RR and the Western & Atlantic RR} |
