Col. John W. Balfour |

Mr Adams has called on me today for
payment of his services in taking your negroes to the salt works in
Clark Co. Ala. He states that his travelling time in going and returning
was six days and that he was delayed three days in addition. His charge
is six hundred dollars. I decline to pay more than a fair and
reasonable compensation for the service. Ten dollars per day and his
expenses will be ample. Whenever the amount is presented in shape on
this basis I will pay it. |
Your letter stating that you had concluded
to take your hands from the work was received this morning. I shall
offer no opposition or argument on the premises, but will say that,
whatever contract Dr. J. L. Grant made with you in the matter of hire,
&c. of the negroes will be responded to, whether you take the negroes
away or not. I regret that you should fell any dissatisfaction, and hope
you will be kind enough to state the grounds frankly and whatever is
wrong I doubt not that we can readily set right. |
