NA, ENG 3/27/1865

Engineer Bureau

Richmond, 27 March 1865

Capt. L. P. Grant  Engineers
Augusta, Ga.

Captain,
Maj. Gen. Gilmer directs me to ackng receipt of your letter of 16th inst reporting progress of repairs on Ga. R. Road. The Bureau is well aware of the difficulties under which you have labored arising from the want of Labor & materials, and especially from the continued rains of the past month. Some few days ago Maj. Gen. M. L. Smith, Engr's, was written to to urge him to extend every assistance in his power, to enable you to forward the work. He was requested to have all the force under Captains Hazlehurst, Glenn, & others set to work on the Georgia Road.
It is with much regret that the Bureau learns the force employed under Maj. Hottle on the Atlanta & W. Point Road has probably been disbanded instead of continuing the repair of track through and Eastward from Atlanta. The attention of the Qr. Mr. General will be called to the matter, also a telegraphic communication will be sent to Col. Brent asking that the mistake be corrected as far as practicable.
In reference to the Iron from the Macon & Brunswick Rail Road a telegram will be sent to Genl. Beauregard requesting his order, given as a military necessity be carried into execution. To await proceedings in the Courts, in the present state of affairs, will be ruinous.
Full confidence is felt that you will do all possible to expedite the straightening and untwisting of the Iron Rails, injured by the enemy.
Very respectfully
Yr obt Svt
J. H. Alexander
