Major, |
I have the honor to report through you to
Gen. Gilmer that the recent freshet has been very destructive in North
Eastern & Middle Ga. A large majority of the common road bridges have
been swept away. Much to my gratification, we saved the Oconee Bridge.
The track is progressing as rapidly as possible with the small force
engaged. Impressing agents have not been successful in obtaining
negroes. The new impressment under Col. Browne will, it is hoped, give
an ample force. The Ga. R. Road is now open to Rutledge 113 miles from
Augusta. The Macon & Western is open to Jonesboro, 82 miles from Macon.
The Atlantic & West Point is open from West Point towards Atlanta to
Fairburn, 68 miles. |
