Captain, |
So soon as the present emergency will
permit I wish you to have he line between Battery No 8 and the artillery
position at Mr Beverly Walkin's house on the Washington road, relocated:
throwing it forward to the crest of the hill; the artillery position
between the two points should be advanced, to the crest and the rifle
pits run as straight from this point to the other two points named as
the nature of the ground will permit; the battery at Mr Walkin's house
is very badly constructed and the only way in which I see that it can be
remedied is by extending the flanks and placing two embrasures in each
flank so as to see up respectively the Washington road and the old Sand
Hills road. Let the present work between the points required be thrown
back into the trench and all damages to private property be repaired as
soon as practicable. The whole line should be staked out before any work
is begun on it so as to be certain that no future mistakes can occur. |
Very Respectfully |
Yours &c |

I find but little clearing being done in front of the
line this should be attended to immediately. |
