Captain, |
Yours of the 14th inst. came to hand this
morning. Your dispatch was received yesterday. I saw Genl. Duff Green in
Atlanta, and induced him to telegraph you to call on Mr. Stone for 15
tons of pig metal. The old castings from the wreck ought to supply the
remainder. Mr. Maxwell told me that the old castings would answer for
recasting by mixing with new pig metal. Please ascertain the weight of
old castings from the Supt. Maj. Hoss
{Superintendent, East Tennessee & Virginia RR}. The Govt. will be
entitled to the old castings, rods and all other materials from the
wreck that can be made available in reconstruction. Genl. Green says, if
more iron is needed, we can take it. My estimate is 28 tons for both
bridges, made from the data given by Mr. Maxwell of which there can
certainly be 13 tons supplied from the wreck. |
Your course with Mr. Stone will be
approved by the Dept. It was in strict accordance with our joint
understanding when we parted at Knoxville. |
I have met with some difficulty in
obtaining transportation for the lumber, but hope to overcome it. A
dispatch from Macon this morning states that my appeal to the Central
{(of Georgia)} & S. W. R. R. Cos. has been
successful. |
I am very truly Yours |
