Major, |
I have the honor to acknowledge the
receipt of your letter of the 24th ultimo. |
Major E. T. D. Myers arrived in Augusta on
the 1st inst., but has not yet had an opportunity of conferring
with Gen. Beauregard. Maj. Myers concurs with me in the steps already
taken but the views of Gen. Beauregard may change the plan in reference
to taking iron from Aug. & Sav. R. Rd. It is not deemed practicable to
procure iron from the Central {(of Georgia)}
R. Road below Millen. My own impression is that the line to
Macon, vial Millen cannot be re-established while the enemy hold
Savannah. I have had no force that could be applied to the improvement
of the wagon road between Mayfield & Milledgeville without suspending
repairs of Geo. R. Road. The force on the latter work does not exceed
200, when we need 700. The new impressment is now being made by Capt.
Armstrong whose energy & promptness will soon give me a force. I have
been unable to procure proper field transportation by wagons & mules. I
have asked for an officer to impress teams, but Col. Brent replied he
could give me no none. As Maj. Gen. M. L. Smith will now have general
control of the work the question of teams had better be referenced to
him. |
The track is laid to Social Circle. The
weather has been so unusually bad that our progress has been slow. |
Capt. Hazlehurst is giving his attention
to the Atlanta & West Point and Macon & Western R. Roads. He reports the
cross ties ready to complete the former to Atlanta. The delivery of iron
has been delayed by transportation of troops. |
I am Major |
Very Respectfully |
