This is to certify that I was called to see Ambrose a negro man belonging to Philip Fitzgerald of Clayton Co. Ga. on Sunday afternoon 12th inst. and found him suffering from a malignant attack of sore throat, called diphtheria with danyerines(?) constitutional symptoms which, after every effort to relieve them did not abute, but terminated in death some forty hours after my first visit. It was not practicable to move him at any time.
In regard to the cause of said negro's disease I know nothing save that such diseases may, and do frequently occur from ??situde of temperature, sudden cooling from rain or otherwise while very war &c.

This is to certify that Ambrose a negro boy belonging to Philip Fitzgerald of Clayton County Georgia, came to my house on Saturday evening the 11th instant and reported shortly after that his clothing was wet from rain. It rained very heavily on that day at about four (4) oclock P. M. containing for over half an hour, from which time until after the arrival of Ambrose at my house I do not recollect of its having rained any. He arrived at my house about eight (8) oclock P. M. On Sunday morning about 9 oclock he was taken ?? ly ill, complained of sore throat. Dr. John G. Westmoreland was called in to see him and came that afternoon. He attended to the negro boy until Monday evening the 13th inst. when he discontinued his visits. Ambrose died on Tuesday morning the 14th inst. For three weeks previous to his death he visited my house every week, usually on Wednesday night, and Saturday night -- as I understood by request of his master, and with the permission of the overseer of the Government works on which he was engaged.
