Captain, |
During the recent visit of Mr. Pollard,
Presdt of the Montgomery & West Point R. Road to this city, he urged
upon the War Department the importance of connecting the terminus of the
Rail Roads at that place, stating that a great saving to the Government
would result therefrom in the items of drayage on public freight,
transfer of troops &c. |
You will please to go to Montgomery and
examine fully as to the proposed connection and report to this Bureau
the length of track that will be required, the amount of iron, the cost
of construction, and such other facts as may be necessary to a full
understanding of the subject. You will ascertain and report the probable
saving to the Government to result from the connection. On this point,
it will be well to confer with Mr. Pollard and others familiar with the
amount of service performed by the rail road for the Government. |
Very Respectfully Yours &c. |
