| Major, |
| I have the honor to acknowledge the
receipt of Genl Gilmer's telegram of this inst. asking if steps have
been taken to rebuild the State Road {Western &
Atlantic RR}, and if the Govr had applied for assistance. |
| The Governor has not applied for
assistance so far as I have knowledge. The only steps taken by the
Executive in relation to the Road is the sending of officers to report
the extent of injury. The most reliable information I can obtain is that
the track & bridges from Atlanta to Etowah River inclusive are
destroyed. Beyond Etowah no injury of moment is reported. Length of
track destroyed about 46 miles. Length of bridges at Chattahoochee &
Etowah 1200 feet. |
| Very Respectfully |
