Sir, |
Under authority conferred on me by Col. J.
F. Gilmer, Chief of Engineer Bureau C. S. A. you are assigned to the
following duty in the service of the Engineer Department of the
Confederate States. |
You will provide as soon as practicable to
the Salines of Clark County Alabama on Jackson's Creek, and make a
survey and plat of that portion of the "State Reserve" now partially
occupied by the Alabama State salt works under the direction of Col.
McGhee, extending from Jackson's creek eastwardly to the pine hills
(about 2500 feet) embracing in your plat the tract of flat land between
the line of "Reserve" and the small tributary of Jackson's creek on the
south east, say between 40 and 50 acres. Over this tract establish a
series of cross sections 50 feet apart with elevations taken accurately
at 50 ft. distances. |
You are authorized to construct for the
building of 4 log houses of about 20 feet square, to be well roofed and
floored similar to those erected at the State works. The location of
these will be at your discretion, at any point on the "Reserve" without
interfering with the State works. |
You are also authorized to contract for
boring 4 artesian wells for salt water in a direct line with the State
wells. They should be about 150 feet apart. The bore to be 8 inches, if
that size augers can be obtained. |
Further instructions will be forwarded
from time to time as may be necessary. |
Mr. Charles F. Williams and John A. Grant
are placed under your orders to assist in the surveys and other service
which you may assign to them. |
