I wrote you some weeks ago requesting you
to ??ior your negroes employed on the Defenses of Atlanta. It is the
opinion of the Supt. of the works and of Mr. Middleton your agent &
overseer that the women and small negroes of both sexes, have not earned
the rations with which they have been supplied. The conditions of hiring
embraced the stipulation made by yourself, verbally that you would not
expect the Govt. to employ the force, if on trial, the labor was not
satisfactory to me. |
Under the circumstances, Major, I am
constrained to turn the force over to your Agent. The women can be hired
here to great advantage for other purposes. They are entirely unfit to
work with the shovel and pick. Mr. Middleton will await your
instructions as to the disposition of the negroes. |
