General,
I have the honor to reply to your letter of the 10th dated at Athens Ga. From some unknown cause of detention the letter did not reach this office until the 17th. The outer line of Defences of Augusta was abandoned by order of Col. J. J. Clarke Chf Engr. of Dept. at the time the city was supposed to be threatened by the enemy, and the force of hands employed on the inner line. On the fall of Savannah Col. Clarke relieved me from the charge of defences directing that my attention should be given to the repairs of the Geo. R. Road. Subsequently Genl. Gilmer has given me charge of repairs of the Rail Roads of Geo.
I telegraphed you on the 18th for what funds you could spare. The settlement for negro hire & other expenses incurred while on work of defense will devolve upon me.
I am General
