General, |
Under instructions from yourself & Col. M.
H. Wright, I have nearly completed a line of defence around Atlanta,
consisting of redoubts on prominent eminences connected by rifle pits.
The eminences mostly have rounded or conical summits, and I have
adopted, generally, redoubts with five faces, varying the angles to suit
the contours of the hills occupied. These works are all open in the
rear. Do you wish them closed by stockades? Your letter in reference to
a 2d line and felling the timber in front, was handed me by Col. Wright.
The destruction of forest will be great. |
Will you be kind enough to state your
original instructions in reference to my quarters. Did you intend that I
should be entitled to the customary commutation allowed to Capts. for
quarters fuel &c? If so, I shall need your statement that Atlanta has
been my quarters to enable me to draw the commutation. |
I am General |
Very Respectfully |
