Colonel, |
In obedience to your telegram of the 22d,
I repaired to Knoxville, reaching that place on the 26th after 24 hours
delay on the road. |
An interview with Maj. Norqust satisfied
me that it would be better to let the matter of rebuilding the bridges
rest on his hands. The step taken by Maj Norqust under Maj. Genl.
Buchner's orders seem to be judicious. He had previously to my arrival
engaged Mr. Maxwell the energetic contractor and the work of erecting
temporary trestling to pass the trains had been commenced. I think you
may rest satisfied that the work will be pushed with energy. |
I have the duplicates for upper Holston
completed, and the Watauga in progress. With your concurrence I will
proceed to duplicate the Strawberry Plains and Ten. River Bridges. The
latter is at London on the E. Ten. & Geo. R. R. and narrowly escaped the
last raid. It is the most important Bridge structure on the line of R.
R. between Chattanooga & Lynchburg. |
Very Respectfully |
L. P. Grant |
