Captain, |
I am informed by an endorsement upon an
application to the Secy of War, in relation to the impressment of negro
Shoemakers for this Depot, that you have been instructed to turn over to
me all such workmen. |
If you will permit me, I would like to
suggest that you use as much dispatch as possible in prosecuting your
investigations as to the occupation of the hands who may be turned over
to you, since I find it absolutely necessary to have all my shoes made
by negro laborers in future. It is impossible for me I find to hold on
to the detailed soldiers I have employed in this way, and the army nees
shoes so badly that I must do something to meet the demand. |
Hoping that you may be able to assist me
in this way & to suggest anything else in this connexion that your
experience ma have taught, I have the honor to be very respy |
