Colonel, |
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of
your letter of the 17th and 28th ultimo. I have delayed acknowledging
the receipt of the former pending an interchange of views with Maj. J.
J. Clarke Corps Engineers at Savannah, on the subject of negro labor for
the different works of Defense in this State. |
Major Clarke suggests that we act in
concert in procuring labor and that he apportion the same as may seem
best for the interest of the service. The number of negroes required
here in addition to those now engaged is 200. |
In answer to your inquiry of the 28th
ultimo. I am able to say that duplicate bridges are now being framed
under my direction for the W. & A. R. R. {Western
& Atlantic RR} I have lumber on hand for a duplicate of
Strawberry Plains Br. on the E. T. & Va. R. R. My impression is that the
lumber can be obtained in the course of 3 months sufficient to duplicate
(or rebuild) the principle structures on the E. T. & Ga. and the
Nashville & C. R. R. {Nashville & Chattanooga RR} |
