Captain, |
Yours of the 1st. inst. has this moment
come to hand. The Defenses of Atlanta consist of Redoubts and Rifle
pits. The former generally intended for five guns each. The contour of
the eminences around the City is such, that redoubts seemed to me to be
the most economical plan, and quite as effective as any other. Of these
we have 17, of which 4 are unfinished. The earth work of 13 is completed
but plank platforms not laid. The line of Rifle pits is nearly complete
extending entirely around the City. The length of line is about 7 1/2
miles averaging about 1 1/4 miles from the centre of the City. To render
the Defences effective, the forest growth must be felled in front. This
has not been done to any extent. |
I will send a tracing soon. Am now without
a draughtsman. |
