Since large, cross-state business was a new
phenomenon, many of the solutions to problems that we take for granted
had not yet been created. To present new solutions to many companies at
one time and to get their agreement to such solutions required
"conventions." Railroads, banks, insurance companies, etc. held such
meetings as needed and businesses generally abided by the resolutions
adopted by such conventions. We have no such meetings today, for fear of
violating monopoly and restraint of trade laws, with the single
exception of political conventions.
|
Confederate railroad conventions began with the first one
during the formation of the government in Montgomery. The last was in
Virginia, shortly before the end of the war. The railroads had common
problems -- rates to charge the government, relations to government
officers, sources of labor and materials, and others. Unfortunately, the
conventions were not able to solve the most serious problems and most
conventions ended up being rate-setting meetings. |
I am unaware of any compilation of the Confederate railroad
conventions, so I offer the 20+ listed below, subject to change: |
