Railroad Convention |
A Convention of Presidents of railroads
was held at Columbia, S. C. on the 4th inst., at which 3,528 miles of
completed roads were represented, including roads in Alabama,
Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. A
liberal scale of charges for government freight and transportation of
troops was adopted. And it was resolved to establish two rolling mills
for the rolling of railroad iron and the manufacture of supplies, one
in the iron and coal region of Alabama, and the other on Deep River in
North Carolina. The Companies in South Carolina, North Carolina and
Virginia to unite in the erection of the works on Deep River, and the
Companies in the other States to erect the other. |
A regulation was entered into for stopping
at suitable places to enable soldiers in the cars to get water. |
