In response to a letter addressed to the
Quarter Master General of the Confederate States by the President of
the Board of Public Works in reference to the communication of the
rail road companies of the state of Virginia for government
transportation, a letter has been received from Col. F. W. Sims of the
rail road bureau suggesting a conference between himself and the
representatives of the rail roads on the 29th of September 1864 Col
Sims proposes that each representative shall pledge his company to
abide by the results of that conference, and he also desires that an
exhibit be made at the conference of the operations of each road for
the last fiscal year, and so much of the present fiscal year as can be
ascertained. He desires statements of |
"Gross earnings from Government" |

"
" for things" |
"
"
" from private
sources" |
"Working expenses" |
"Estimated depreciation of
rails" |
"
"
" of
rolling stock" |

and any other information bearing on the subject. It is
deemed proper by the Board of Public works to inform the rail road
companies of this proposition and suggestion, in order that they may
take such action on the subject as they may think proper. It is
therefore Ordered, that a copy of the foregoing statement be forwarded
to the President of each of the rail road companies of the state of
Virginia. |
