Supplies and Material of Railroad
Meeting of Railroad Officers
   A meeting of the officers of the several railroads in North Carolina and Virginia was held at the Exchange Hotel, Richmond, December 19, 1861.
   Dr. Hawkins, of North Carolina, was appointed chairman, and Messrs. Talcott and Vandergrift secretaries.
   On motion of General Ashe, the meeting adjourned to meet at 8 o'clock, P. M., at his office.
   According to adjournment, the meeting was called to order at 8 P. M., by the chairman; Messrs. Ruth and Whitcomb were appointed temporary secretaries.
   The object of the meeting was briefly explained by Colonel Fontaine, of the Virginia Central Railroad Company.
   The meeting was addressed by Messrs. Joynes, of the Petersburg Railroad Company; Daniel, of the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad Company; Fontaine, of the Virginia Central Railroad Company; Harvie, of the Richmond & Danville Railroad Company; Johnston, of the Charlotte & South Carolina Railroad Company; General Ashe, of the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad Company.
   On motion, a committee, consisting of the presidents of the several railroads terminating in Richmond and Petersburg, General Ashe, of the Wilmington & Weldon road, and Dr. Hawkins, of the Raleigh & Gaston road, was appointed to take measures to ascertain the wants of the railroad companies of the Confederacy in supplies of various kinds and the most feasible plan for supplying those wants, and to report to an adjourned meeting to be called by the chairman.
   Colonel Fontaine was appointed chairman of the committee to which the various suggestions offered were referred, and who were empowered and directed to confer with the State and Confederate authorities.
   On motion of Mr. Harvie, the following resolution was adopted:
   Resolved, That it be recommended to the Confederate authorities to use the iron and material taken from the Baltimore & Ohio railroad so as to conduce most efficiently to the prosecution of the existing war, and not for the use of local roads.
   On motion of Mr. Barbour, a committee of three was appointed to lay the subject embraced in the foregoing resolution before the proper authority.
   The Chairman appointed Messrs. Barbour, Daniel and Harvie as the committee.
   Railroads represented -- Raleigh & Gaston, Dr. Hawkins; Charlotte & South Carolina, William Johnston; Wilmington & Weldon, General Ashe; Petersburg & Weldon {Petersburg}, Mr Joynes; Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac, Mr. Daniel; Richmond & Danville, Mr. Harvie; Seaboard & Roanoke, Mr. Wilson; Orange & Alexandria, Mr. Barbour; North Carolina and Western, Mr. Malette {Mallett}; Virginia Central, Mr. Fontaine.
