Meeting of Railroad Superintendents |
Pursuant to a request made by the Governor
of Virginia, a meeting of the Superintendents of the Railroads in the
State was held in the Capitol on Tuesday, May 28th, 1861. |
Present — E. H. Gill, Virginia &
Tennessee Railroad; H. D. Bird, South-Side Railroad; C.
O. Sanford, Petersburg Railroad; Thos. Dodamead, Virginia
Central Railroad; S. Ruth, Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac
Railroad; Charles G. Talcott, Richmond & Danville Railroad; R. H.
Temple, Richmond & York River Railroad; John M. Robinson, Seaboard
& Roanoke Railroad: and T. H. Wynne, Richmond & Petersburg
Railroad. |
On motion, H. D. Bird was called to the
Chair, and T. H. Wynne appointed Secretary. |
Mr. Sanford informed the meeting that by
his invitation, Mr. S. L. Fremont, Superintendent of the Wilmington
& Weldon Railroad, in North Carolina, was present, and on motion Mr. Fremont was invited to take a seat in
the Convention. |
The Governor having been informed that the
meeting was ready for business, his Excellency came in and stated that
he had called the Superintendents together for the purpose of making
arrangements for running trains over the roads in such a manner as to
secure close connections through the State, and especially in
Richmond, and added that the principal difficulty existed on the
Orange and Alexandria, the Virginia Central, and the Richmond and
Petersburg Railroads, and he requested that the meeting would take
such steps as would secure this desirable object. |
On motion, Messrs. Dodamead, Ruth and
Sanford were appointed a committee to arrange a schedule for the roads
mentioned by the Governor. |
After consulting together the following
schedule-was reported, and unanimously adopted: |

On motion, the following resolution was
adopted, and the Governor approved of it: |
Resolved, That when an hour is named in a
requisition for a train to carry troops or munitions of war, and the
troops or munitions are not ready at the hour agreed upon, the train
shall forfeit its claim to the road, and shall be started at such hour
as the Superintendent of the road may deem safe. |
On motion, the following resolution was
adopted: |
Resolved, That this Convention recommend
to each Railroad Company in the State to erect a telegraph line for
the exclusive use of the Railroad companies, erecting the same at as
early a day as practicable. |
On motion, it was. |
Resolved, That running by the above
schedule shall commence on Monday, June 3d. |
On motion the meeting adjourned sine die. |
