Galveston, Houston & Henderson

A charter was granted to the road in 1853. Construction began in 1854 and was completed  from Galveston to Houston in 1860.

Reports to the State Engineer in 1861 and 1862 indicate the road was leasing an additional 3 locomotives and 21 cars from "R&P Est of" (meaning Real & Personal Estate Association).

The entire road was leased to the Confederate government in 1862, except for mail and passenger trains. It was extended 5.6 miles to service the batteries on the eastern and southern sides of Galveston Island.

The road had taken three mortgages, totaling $5.75 million, in the few years before the war and a court case in the late 1800's contended that this road and the Junction road were being run as one road, with all the money going through the Junction company, leaving the mortgage holders with a property that was not maintained and was falling in value. The R&P Est Ass owned all the rolling stock and leased it to this road as part of the scheme to make as much money as possible, without paying off the mortgages.
