There is no biography
of Thomas Dodamead in the National Archives since he was not in the
Confederate Army. Below is my biography
of the man.
|
The 1860 Census shows Thomas
Dodamead as having been born in Pennsylvania in about 1818 (ie he
was 42 years old). He lived in Richmond with a wife (Martha,
1813-1903) and had
Real Estate of $6,000 and Personal Estate of $2,000. The couple had
at least six children, 3 of whom were already dead (ages 3, 18 and
22 years at death). The family had moved to Virginia in 1843.
Dodamead learned the trade of locomotive building (probably in
Philadelphia) and is reported to have delivered a locomotive to the
Richmond & Petersburg RR in 1845 and the railroad asked him to stay
in charge of their machine shop. Regardless of this story, he worked
for the Richmond & Danville RR and the Richmond & Petersburg RR
(according to the 1850 and 1853-4 annual reports of those
companies). He was the Superintendent of the Virginia Central RR
from 1855 to 1861. Dodamead's war career is below. |
As the war ended, Dodamead
communicated with the approaching Union commanders and facilitated
the maintenance of his road and the surrender of Danville, Va. In
June, 1865, the Virginia Board of Public Works appointed him General
Superintendent of all railroads in Virginia, a job that was in
addition to his Richmond to Piedmont railroad job and probably only
lasted until the Army turned the railroads over to their companies
later in the year. In early 1869, Dodamead was elected President of
the Richmond & York River RR, but was listed as Superintendent of
that road, with Algeron S. Buford being listed as President. |
In October 1873, he took over as
Superintendent of the Greenville & Columbia RR in South Carolina. He
left that job in 1882 and returned to Richmond to live until he
died in 1885. |
Dodamead is not known to have
held any military rank. His "rank" as aide to the Governor of
Virginia was to indicate pay and allowances, not uniform rank. He
always signed as "Superintendent" or "Military Superintendent." |
