There is no biography of
Captain Gray in the National Archives. Below is my biography of the
man.
|
William G. Gray was born in
Edinburg, Scotland in 1834. In the 1860 Census, he was living in the
Chatham section of Savannah, Georgia (about 4 miles northwest of
city center) in Savage's Hotel. His occupation was that of a Clerk
at the Commission House. He was listed as having $2500 real estate and
$1000 personal property and was not married. |
"Willie" G. Gray is listed in his
service record as a Private in Capt. Joseph S. Claghorn's Company
(the Chatham Artillery) of the 1st Volunteer Regiment of Georgia,
having enlisted February 20, 1862 at Camp Claghorn. He is shown as
sick at the April 30 muster and returned to duty by the June 30
muster. He is shown as Discharged August 2, 1862 as a non-resident
by order of General Mercer. Gray must have changed his mind or his
status, because he was appointed a Captain and AQM of the 1st
Battalion of Georgia Sharp Shooters on March 1, 1863. He was present
at each muster until released by Special Order 224 of September 21,
1864 to serve with Lt. Col. Sims. |
Gray appears to have survived the
war, but his name is so common it has been impossible to locate him
afterwards. |
