Lt. Col. F. W. Sims |

Private Sager was detailed last winter with seventeen
other men by order of Lt. Genl. Longstreet to assist in rebuilding
the bridges &c of this road, and was left in service of this Co,
with the evacuation of E. Tenn by our troops in the spring, since
which time he has been in the service of Virginia & Tenn. R. R. Co
employed on the bridges &c of that road. When Maj Gen. Breckinridge
advanced into E. Tenn, about a month ago, the detailed men above
mentioned were ordered back on this road to assist in repairing our
track and rebuilding our bridges &c and attached to a company of
Sappers & Miners under the command of Lt. Wargranc and taken to the
front, and left in active military duty until the enemy were drawn
west of Strawberry Plains, they even then sent back to work again on
the bridges of this road, and have since been in our service. Mr.
Sager is an excellent mechanic and one of the most faithful men we
have on our road and would regret very much to have to give him up,
as he has made himself exceedingly useful to us, with much
experience in bridge work and repairing of cars. I am of opinion he
cannot be in any other position so useful to the public service, and
respectfully request that he be allowed to remain uninterrupted in
the service of this company. |
I am Very respectfully |

{It is clear that a request for renewal of
detail for Private Sager had been submitted by Supt. Goforth about
November 20 or so (document not found). After going through Col.
Sims, it was sent to the QMG and returned on Nov. 26 (above) asking
for more information. Sims asked Goforth for that information
(above) and the letter at top is his reply, followed by the return
through the usual chain of endorsements} |
