Below are listed the railroads east of the
Mississippi River, who were operating January 1, 1861, with their
mileage and rolling stock inventory at the start of the war.
|
For road length, the railroad home pages show total length
(including sidings); this table shows main line length. |
|
Florida roads are not included, since they contributed
nothing to the railroad network. The Alexandria, Loudoun &
Hampshire RR is also not included, since it never carried
freight for the Confederacy. |
|
"Connected" indicates whether the railroad is part of a
railroad network or is isolated -- it does not mean the rails
were connected. |
|
"Cars" has Pole, Hand, Repair, Crank and living cars
removed, when known. |

Notes: 1. Many of the short lines were
the first miles of much longer roads that were just
starting construction when the war started.
2. Almost all the roads not in the network were short
lines from a resource (plantation area, forest,
coalfield) to a port or were city roads serving New
Orleans. |

the beginning of the war to support the main war effort
for the Confederacy. |
