Since Charles Maurice Smith has
no biography in the National Archives, below is my biography of the
man.

Maurice was born in Lynchburg,
Va. in 1817. Before the war, he was a land officer clerk and
newspaperman in Richmond. He may have been a lawyer in Utah from
1853 through 1857. After the war, he was a Richmond newspaper man,
then Commissioner of Deeds in Washington, D. C. He died April 1,
1881, in Port Royal, Va., when he was thrown from a buggy. |
