Eugene V. Early was 23 years old
when the war started. He listed Lafayette County, Missouri as his
home, but is not found there in the 1860 census. The 1870 census
shows him born in Missouri and working as a Railroad Agent in
Lauderdale County, Mississippi. He married Eunice Wallingham in
1868; she died the following year. Two young children are living with
him in the 1870 Census, but no wife. In the summer of 1871, he was
appointed Superintendent and Treasurer of the bankrupt Alabama &
Chattanooga RR (operating from Meridian to Attalla). He is
found as a member of the Committee of Safety after the March 15,
1871 riot in Meridian, Mississippi, then as Mayor of Meridian, in 1874-5, having obviously
decided to settle there after his war service in the town. He was
the Station Agent at Meridian for the Mobile & Ohio RR until his
death in 1878. |
