Richmond & Danville Locomotive Usage |
The Richmond & Danville Railroad kept
records of each locomotive's mileage in each of 10 usage
categories from October 1860 through September 1863. Below are links to
the details of each year.
The 1862 and 1863 mileage for the entire group was 25% higher than for the partial-peace year of 1861. To keep that level of usage required the addition of 2 locomotives for the 1863 year to cover for 2 locomotives that spent the entire year in the shops (probably needing impossible to find parts). Column definitions: Passenger -- trains composed of passenger, baggage, and express cars Freight -- food, raw materials, and military supplies in box, platform, and stock cars Coal -- the coal pits were only a few miles outside Richmond, so round trips produced very low mileage Stone/Log -- building materials for the CS government Belle Isle -- an island in the James River with a POW camp and manufacturing facilities Shifting -- building and breaking down of trains in the Richmond yard Material & Wood -- building materials and firewood for Richmond Gravel -- track repair and maintenance train Special -- government-required trains, usually for troop movements Richmond & Danville Railroad Locomotive Usage FY1861 |
