B. {Benjamin} B. {Bryan} Lewis was 45
years
when the war started. He was born in North Carolina and, after his
second marriage, he lived in Macon, Ga. In early 1862, he sponsored
an infantry company, the Lewis Volunteers, in Macon. When the conscription age was raised to
50 at the start of 1864, he became eligible for conscription and was
appointed as the Bonded Transportation Agent for Macon. On January
1, 1865, he hired out an additional 5 slaves to the Macon Armory.
After the war, he spent five years in banking in New York, then
returned to North Carolina. He died in 1887. |
At the end of the war, he was
described as light complexioned, with auburn hair and gray eyes, and
5 ft 10 in tall. |
