Alexandria & Washington |
|||
This road was chartered in 1854,
construction began in 1857 and operations began January 1, 1858. The
track ran from Alexandria to Jackson City on the southern end of the
Long Bridge into Washington, D. C. Goods were unloaded at the bridge,
wagoned across, then loaded onto cars for connection with the Baltimore
& Ohio RR.
The road in Virginia was 5 miles long and did not connect to any other road. When the Union captured Alexandria on May 24, 1861, the Confederate sympathizer President managed to get his rolling stock hauled to the Orange & Alexandria RR for escape south. |
