Virginia & Tennessee Wood
Providing an ample supply of locomotive fire wood was essential to running a railroad. In the South, contracts were let to men to provide quantities of wood, cut as directed, delivered either along the road or at depots. The men making the contracts usually contracted for multiple years and used gangs of slaves to fulfill the contracts. The drafting of the contractors by the army was the subject of many letters and exemptions.
Below are several tables to illuminate the wood situation on the Virginia & Tennessee RR.
