Several railroads employed bridge guards. The pay records of the Richmond & Danville RR are mostly complete from January 1862 through October 1863. Guards were employed as listed below. The number at each bridge was usually met for the entire month, though with many men only serving a part of a month. There was also one supervisor of guards. All these men's wages were reimbursed to the company by the Confederate Government. | |
