Since construction of this railroad did not start until well after the war started, it had no locomotives when the war began. | |||||||

Lee (B&O #226 captured by Jackson in 1861) was purchased from the government and placed on the road in September. Atlas (a Pope capture, named Ferguson by the US) was leased from the Richmond & Danville RR and was placed on the road in October. General Pettigrew, Black Dwarf and Roanoke were obtained from the Confederate government (Roanoke had come from the Roanoke Valley RR). General Pettigrew was the captured Union Exeter and was on the tracks starting in December. Amelia was acquired from the Richmond & Danville RR. |

Chickahominy was leased from the Richmond & York River RR in June. It was the captured Union Speedwell. In December, the road reported owning 4 locomotives: Lee, Hercules, Atlas and Roanoke and using 7 (4 from Manassas Gap RR) hired locomotives: Chickahominy, James, Collins, Gordon, Staunton, Carolina and Virginia. Black Dwarf was sold to the Confederate Naval Works in Columbus, Ga. and was under repair there starting in October. |

Culpeper {Orange & Alexandria RR} and No. 3 {Manassas Gap RR} were added to the road in late January. Culpeper exploded at the depot on March 3. |
