As I have a few leisure moments, I
will endeaver to give you the latest knews. I Receive a letter from you
a few Days ago also one from Miss G. Allison giving me the knews in
Tulasiki it gratifies me very much to hear from you but you have no idea
how mich pleasure it would give me to be with you. I wrote to you a few
days ago but intend writing every opportunity I Receive a letter from
Eavart yesterday stating the knews in Raleigh they are all very well. We
are situated within four miles of the Potomac River. the yankeys have
Retreated back to the other side of the River if we have fighting a tall
it will certainly be a hard battle however they know the strength of our
army & will certainly bring a sufficient force to try to over power us.
we burnt about twenty thousand Dollars worth of cars at Martinsburg
yesterday and are in a very sickley place if you will look on the map

{probably 20-year old John C. Honaker of Fayette County, Va. (170 miles south of
Martinsburg) to his mother, Rachael B. John was a member of Company C,
4th Va. Inf. Reg. and was killed in battle on July 21, 1861 in the
Battle of First Manassas.} |
