My Dear Sir, |
I have today had an interview
with Mr Dunn, Asst. Eng. &c from whom I learn that on Saturday next the
track will reach Brown Summit, & on the same day will be extended six
(6) miles from Reidsville. I desire, in order to economise wagon
transportation, to move Capt Barbour's depot on Monday next to Brown's
Summit; & beg to be informed if you will have your agent at the
Reidsville terminus? If yes, as I hope will be the case you observe that
my wagon transportation will be diminished to seven miles, the
importance of which you can fully appreciate. In view of my contemplated
arrangements I think it desirable to set up shanties at the Reidsville
terminus, & beg you to inform when your company's agent will be located
at the new terminus? I desire also to know if you regard the engine you
have as competent to do your work & mine when the above changes are
made? You observe that in proportion to the increased length of track
will be the increased work which I can find for your engine; in view of
this fact I have thought it might operate a relief to your Road to
obtain an engine, & could get one from Mr. Rice
{Superintendent, Manassas Gap RR, operating out of Greensboro},
but in his opinion it would be too heavy for your track, which he
examined in my company on yesterday. If you agree with me & consider
another engine necessary you will be kind enough to indicate your
opinion & give the necessary permission for it to run upon your Rd. bed. |
I have requested Mr Dunn to
inform you that your corn on its arrival will be promptly stored, &
indeed that I am most anxious to advance your views & wishes to the
extent of my ability. |
In the present condition of
affairs too much importance cannot be attached to the completion of your
Rd., which I beg you to believe I am most cordially anxious to assist
you in completing. |
Command me to the extent of my
abilities, & believe me. |
Very faithfully, |
S R Chisman {in
