His Excellency Jos. E. Brown
Governor of Georgia

Sir,
After reading the correspondence between your Excellency, Adj & Inspr Genl Wayne, and Genl R E Lee in relation to the Rail Road connection through Augusta, I felt assured that the important work was in progress, if not completed. A communication received by me yesterday through Brig Genl Lawton, makes me apprehensive that it has not yet been commenced. Believing the connection referred to a Military necessity, and feeling my responsibility that no means should be neglected by which to keep up our communication with Charleston, should the enemy cut the C. & S. Road {Charleston & Savannah RR} your Excellency will I hope pardon my uneasiness on this subject.
May I beg to be informed at your earliest convenience whether it is the intention of the authorities of Augusta to carry out your recommendations.
I am sir
Your obt Sevt
