Mr. A. T. Jones |

In reply to your letter of the 19th I will
say that upon enquiry of Mr. Andrews I find that some one did not
comply with the trade in loading your cars with coal at the Montevallo
Mine. Andrews says he left the cars as per agreement and that they are
there now empty (Monday PM). I would suggest that you have the
trade for loading your cars so tight that they cant avoid carrying it
out. |
On the coal question and its
transportation I have made up my mind that we ought to own an
interest in the coal road and I shall make an arrangement with
the other two roads to get control of it myself and manage it on Govt
account. Col. Hunt promises to give me full control of it with the
rolling stock. I can then make one road of it & our Branch at
least so far as the Govt is concerned & put it in good condition
for running locomotives in 30 days. |
Hunt has completely fooled me about the
boiler & taken it away from me after all my efforts in getting it
from Meridian. |
I have heard nothing the Navy ??? yet. |
Have nothing from Tate. Heard nothing from
Hurt ??? & acting from work or his money. But I expect to hear
every day from Florida that some man has bought our cotton, syrup
& meat at a bigger price than we want to give. |
Instead of losing two cars of coal you stole
4. |
respectfully &c |
