To the Prest of the Ala. & Missi. R. R. R.
Co. |
Demopolis, Ala. |
|
Dear Sir, |
In Sept. of last year Mr A.
Battle then Prest of the N. E. & S. W. Ala. R. R. Co. leased to your
Company that portion of the N. E. & S. W. Ala. R. R. lying between
Meridian Missi & York Station in Ala., a distance of about 27 1/2 miles.
This contract of lease was not only without authority, on the part of Mr
Battle, but contrary to instructions. At their first meeting thereafter
the Board of Directors of the N. E. & S. W. Ala. R. R. Co. declined to
ratify this contract with their President Mr Battle, of which due notice
was given to Dr. G. G. Griffin late Prest of your Company. |
It is very desirable, indeed
of the highest importance to our Confederacy, that the present status of
things be changed. With a view to a settlement as to the past, and some
definite and satisfactory understanding as to the future, I propose that
we meet in Selma on Saturday next, or if this time & place shall not
suit your convenience I will meet you on Monday next at any point you
may name on the line of your road. |
This will be handed you by our
Chief Engineer Mr G. W. Robinson who will communicate to me your
decision. |
I have the honor to be |
Very Respectfully Yr Obt. Svt. |
R. Jemison Jr |
Prest. N. E. & S. W. Ala. R. R. Co. |
