Yours of this date enclosing a letter from
Capt. ...... with a complaint against the Company for not
transporting Genl Stevenson's wagon train across Pear{l?}
River is received. |
I telegraphed immediately to C. S. Williams at
Jackson, our Supt of Transportation, to use the utmost expedition in
affording the desired transportation. I am informed that this delay
was occasioned by the conflicting orders about transportation of
troops. Several trains were loaded, started and recalled &
orders issued to keep in readiness a considerable number of cars.
These circumstances will explain the difficulty in the
transportation of the wagon trains & I derive my information
from Capt. Ross who left Jackson yesterday. I am also just in
receipt of Capt Miles' letters to you, stating that if he was
permitted to examine the books of the S. RR Co. he would be enabled
to show that when one pound of Govt sugar had been shipped, five
pounds of private sugar has gone over the road. I do not make the
slightest objection to the desired examination, feeling perfectly
confident that the Co. have fully discharged their obligations to
the Govt. I enclose to you the authority to enable Capt. Miles to
make the examination. |
