General Whiting telegraphs as follows {from Wilmington}:
   Great fire raging on opposite side of river. All Government works and cotton and private cotton below the railroad depot {Wilmington & Manchester RR} destroyed. Cotton press and torpedo-boats gone. Fire broke out in these warehouses simultaneously. Home guards were sentinels on train of eighteen cars burned. Have saved the depot and prisoners.
