The Petersburg Express gives
an account of the Yankee raid in North Carolina. The Yankees numbered
from four to six hundred, and came from Washington, N. C. At Rocky
Mount they burned the depot, five thousand bales of cotton, a large
cotton factory, owned by Wm. S. Battles, captured a train on the
Tarboro' Branch containing two car loads of ammunition, 30,000 pounds
of bacon, which they destroyed. The bridge over Tar river, short
distance from Rocky Mount, was destroyed. The Rail Road track was torn
up a mile or two. |
