The Virginia Salt Trade |
The Memphis Appeal says, The
Superintendent of the South Side Rail Road at Petersburg, has given
notice that the Company has made arrangements with the Virginia &
Tennessee, by which Salt can be procured from the Salt Works in
Western Virginia, and delivered in Petersburg at fair rates. The
conditions upon which the Salt will be sent forward by the Petersburg
Company are, that speculations must have nothing to do with it, and
the party or parties bespeaking a Train of Cars must have 2,800
bushels ready to load at the work, and hands ready to load it. The
large per hundred weight from the works to Petersburg will be 65
cents. The South Side Rail road connects with the Virginia &
Tennessee Rail Road at Lynchburg. The means of transportation are
ample, and should be used to their utmost extent in order to
facilitate the procurement of a sufficient supply. There is no
necessity for the continuance of the extortionate prices, and the need
not be submitted. |
