Death of Col. Ashe |
The Southern cause has lost a fearless and
efficient champion in the death of the Hon. William S. Ashe, of North
Carolina, caused by injuries on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad,
of which he was President. He was formerly a Representative in the
United States Congress, and at the time of his death was a member of
the Confederate Congress, and also field Aid to Gen. Stonewall
Jackson. He was a gentleman of elevated social qualities, and wielded
an extensive influence wherever he was known. He had filled many
distinguished public trusts with uniform ability and fidelity, and his
death excites universal regret. |
