Raiders at Gordon |
On Friday night, soon after the train {on
the Central (of Georgia) RR} with troops for this city had
passed Gordon, a squad of Yankee raiders, supposed to number about
200, attacked the place, and burnt about fifty cars, more or less
filled with freight and Government stores. The passenger train, with
mail and Express, from this city was destroyed. Many of the passengers
lost their baggage. We have not been furnished with particulars.
Several engines were damaged, so as to require repairs before being
fit for use. Altogether it was an unexpected affair on the part of our
citizens, resulting in considerable public and private loss. |
Oconee Bridge |
After burning the cars at Gordon, the
Yankees proceeded down the Central Railroad, burning two Stations,
with quartermaster's stores, and then fired the Railroad Bridge across
the Oconee river. It is stated that the Bridge, including trestle
work, is half a mile long, only part of which has been destroyed. In
the course of two weeks the necessary repairs can be made, and the
regular trips resumed. |
