Richmond, August 21st, 1862 |
No train has left for Gordonsville in the last two days,
and hence I have not been able to join the army at that point, as
indicated in my last letter. The evacuation of Berkeley by
McClellan, or rather the manner of it, has led to some doubt as to
his designs, and it has been considered prudent to retain a
sufficient force here to meet any movement that might be attempted
either by a return to James river or an advance from the White House
in the direction of Gordonsville or the
{Virginia} Central Railroad. To meet the latter emergency, a
large number of cars and locomotives is held here, to be used in
moving forces in this vicinity to any point along the road where
they may be needed. |
