The Atlanta Confederacy says
that eighteen soldiers were killed and sixty-seven wounded from the
collision of two trains on the State Road {Western
& Atlantic RR} the other day. One soldier was caught between the
tender and engine and literally burned to death, after three hours of
horrible suffering, it being impossible to extricate him. The poor
fellow begged his comrades to chop off his thigh and relieve him, but no
one would do it. Still another accident happened on Tuesday on the same
road, between Big Shanty and Marietta, by the breaking of a truck wheel,
which came near being a frightful disaster. Several persons were
injured. |
